Birth of a Venus
Birth of a Venus
Oil on canvas
2002
180 x 280 cm
The subject of this painting deals with the possibility of a future genetically engineered production of the ideal human,or rather,in this case:
in modification to Sandro Bottichelli´s Painting "The birth of Venus",the old and somewhat overweight human couple to the top left is watching the ideal woman who was emerged from a frying pan.
While the old man cannot hide his (lecherous) enthusiasm over this new creation the smile of the old woman is mixed with a certain scepticism.
Down in the laboratory basin, some gross monster fish are swimming about which, however, are instinctively afraid of this artificial creature.
Venus who is admiring herself in a mirror,an act of narcissism,is being received,on the right hand side,by an embryo like figure in an artificial world consisting of a plastic sun,a decorative starry sky and artificial plants.
The painting has been on display at the entrance of the swimming pool Düsselstrand (Kettwiger Street 50,Düsseldorf) since July 2004..
