90 Years of VHS Düsseldorf

90 Jahre VHS Düsseldorf 190 Jahre VHS Düsseldorf 290 Jahre VHS Düsseldorf 390 Jahre VHS Düsseldorf 490 Jahre VHS Düsseldorf

On the occasion of the ninetieth anniversary of Düsseldorf Volkshochschule (adult education centre/VHS),30 participants from my painting and sketching courses designed a large-sized picture (250 x 500 cm,acrylic and oil on canvas). This picture was inaugurated on 9.9.09,the main festive day,and will,as from now,be on display in Hall 1 of the VHS.

Basic sketch of the picture:

The area shape of Düsseldorf, sectioned according to its districts, appears simplified/stylised:

with its wavelike route network in blue colour,it refers to the curvy i.e. meandering course of the river Rhine (likewise blue).

These waves/curves stand for

moevement,dynamics,vitality,networking,communication,diffusion,embedding in to the town.

The area shape has been rotated (by nearly 90 degrees) so to produce a landscape format (at the ratio of 1 to 2) which is suitable for the current (hanging) display area in Hall 1.

The actual area shape of Düsseldorf has been painted in the town`s colours, red and white (alternately). The colour green has been used for the surrounding area (i.e. green-blue alternately),representing the colours of the Bundesland North Rhine Westphalia/NRW.

In the actual composition,my course participants arranged various different motifs on to the picture,collage-like as it were, including architecture in Düsseldorf as well as regional customs, local works of art on display in public and, last not least,well-known local figures.

Top left: a compass rose;inside, the VHS-lettering points towards the South

Bottom right: the logo of VHS - 90 years.

The picture is meant to evoke the assotiation of a treasure map:

many precious and essential objects are distributed all over the red-and-white isle;the VHS-compass offers guidance.

The picture was formed and developed between 14th July - 7th September 2009 in the art studio "ArTRIUM" and contains more than well over 120 motifs taken from and, referrending to,the cultural life in and of Düsseldorf.
